Energy Education

Challenge

Through research, the average Canadian does not know a lot about or understand energy, plus there is a tremendous amount of misinformation.

Solution

Energy Ecosystem (www.energyecosystem.ca). Together with four other founders, Coral collaborates on creating a series of short videos and curriculum-connected teaching materials to educate and inform students. This resource for high school social and science teachers engages students in one of the most significant challenges of our times – meeting

he growing demand for energy while at the same time addressing environmental concerns.

Result

The Energy Ecosystem launched its first video and teaching materials in February 2021, and the feedback on content neutrality is overwhelmingly positive. This material enables balanced discussions and critical thinking. The second video and teaching materials will launch by the end of the year. Overall, our students, our future, will be better informed of the energy industry to make informed choices.

Sustainability program

Challenge

The transmission pipeline industry recognized promoting collaboration and holding each other accountable was necessary to raise the bar overall.

Solution

Integrity First. A sustainability program designed to continuously improve performance and confidence in Canada’s transmission pipeline industry in the areas of safety, environment and socio-economics. Coral led this disruption to industry by collaborating with all levels of organizations in developing a strategy and executing it. She co-led an external advisory panel of pipeline critics from across Canada to the development of Integrity First.

Result

Today, companies continue to self-assess, submit to third-party verification, and work closely together in knowledge sharing to advance practices and the industry. Integrity First, based on a management systems approach, is the industry’s flagship program.

pipelines Public Awareness PROGRAM

Challenge

Public awareness for Canadian operations was part of a larger role of one individual at TC Energy.  With the company expanding, particularly in the United States, the Canadian program was not scalable and was becoming difficult to manage effectively.

Solution

Public Awareness Program.  Working on several integration initiatives at TC Energy, Coral saw a need and proposed a holistic public awareness program.  In developing and implementing this complex program, many challenges were overcome such as language, culture, and regulatory requirements.  The program was guided by the underlying philosophy of ‘it doesn’t matter where you live or work along the pipeline system, everyone has the right to key safety messaging’.  In other words, whether you lived in a remote community in northern Alberta or in the density of Chicago, the safety messaging was the same.  Public awareness is rooted in engineering thinking and effective stakeholder relations.

Result

TC Energy’s holistic Public Awareness program spans three countries – Canada, the United States and Mexico.  It is recognized as a leading program in the industry and the company’s largest stakeholder outreach program reaching over a million stakeholders.

Safety Information for Youth

Challenge

Children and youth tend to explore, bike and play in and around their communities, yet they are not aware of pipelines in the area.

Solution

Youth Energy Safe. It was designed to share safety messages.  The focus for the younger grades is to provide awareness, and the focus for the older grades is to empower.  Engaging children and youth were new for the industry, and as such, the organization created a unique, approachable brand, toolkits for teachers and fun educational posters.

Result

Today, children and youth are more aware of safety around the energy we depend on for our daily lives.

Improving Stakeholder Outreach

Challenge

Emergency officials and emergency responders were receiving  similar messages multiple times, which was not efficient for them.

Solution

Pipeline Operator Safety Partnership (POSP).  POSP, one of several collaborative groups spearheaded by Coral, is aimed specifically at emergency personnel.

Result

“The Pipeline Operators Safety Partnership is committed to building partnerships between pipeline operators and emergency responders to share resources and provide the education needed to safely respond to a pipeline-related emergency.”

Conservation

Challenge

Tourists and locals visit our mountain areas with varying degrees on how to be safe around wildlife.

Solution

Wildlife Ambassador.  As a volunteer wildlife ambassador, Coral communicates facts in an understandable way about bears, cougars, elk and other rocky mountain wildlife.  Conversations about co-existing with wildlife are rich and enjoyable as public awareness includes people of all ages who live near and as far away as India. Safety is important for us and wildlife.

Result

As one of many ambassadors, the program is making great strides in reducing wildlife and human conflict.
